Research interest

Especially people with learning difficulties, mental or physical disabilities, such as visual or hearing impairments, or functional illiterates are unable to understand complex texts. To reduce the resulting communication barriers, there are easy-to-understand and Easy Language (German Leichte Sprache). These languages reduce the text complexity to different degrees to be accessible to a broader group of readers. In my theses, I investigate how NLP techniques can help with automated generation of text simplifications.

Current research topics include:

• Text summarization
• Automatic text simplification (with focus on German Leichte Sprache)
• Evaluation of seq2seq systems
• Definition extraction and generation
• (Text complexity assessment)

I am part of the Software Campus mentorship program where I lead my project "LIANA - LLM-powered Interactive Assistant ExplaiNing Complex Terms to any Audience". The project aims to create the interactive explanation assistant LIANA that can define unfamiliar words to people at a language level that suits them.

Introduction to Informatics for Students of Management & Technology – Programming Lab Course (IN8027)

I am in charge for the programming lab course for Heilbronn BWL students, offered every winter term. In this course, we simulate a software engineering project with the students to provide some practical experience with Java programming and project management. I offer various topics for the project work in Informatics module. If you are interested in a project work, please form a team of 3-4 students and send me an email in which you briefly state your previous experience (programming languages, used tools, data science classes, ..). You are always welcome to suggest own project ideas!
